Course Overview

This 1-credit, hybrid, field-focused course offers a hands-on introduction to Oregon’s diverse coastal ecosystems, including the rocky intertidal, sandy beaches, mud flats, bays, and estuaries. Students will spend a weekend at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center located in Newport, Oregon, exploring these environments, getting hands-on experience with field sampling and species identification, while also learning about the breadth of marine science courses, research opportunities, and other experiential learning pathways available. Perfect for anyone curious about marine biology, interested in trying something new, or learning more about what Hatfield has to offer!

Required Weekend Field Sections 

Students enroll in one of four weekend field section, each of which includes a mandatory overnight field experience at OSU's Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon. 

Weekend Field Section Options

  • Section 1 (CRN 42382): January 31 - February 2, 2026 
  • Section 2 (CRN 42383): February 7 - 8, 2026
  • Section 3 (CRN 42384): February 21 - 22, 2026
  • Section 4 (CRN 42385): February 28 - March 1, 2026

All sections include a Saturday overnight stay in Hatfield Field Housing and round-trip transportation between OSU’s Corvallis campus and Hatfield via OSU Motor Pool vans.
