Course Overview

Misty old-growth forests, rugged shorelines, and vibrant marine ecosystems characterize the Pacific Northwest, where ocean currents, heavy rainfall, and coastal winds sculpt diverse habitats for various marine and terrestrial species. In this field-based course, students will leave the classroom to explore how oceanic and terrestrial forces shape these environments through visits to the rocky intertidal zones and the Siuslaw National Forest. During these field trips, students will identify typical flora and fauna and learn how researchers study these ecosystems' distribution, structure, community composition, and physical features. They will also gain insights into ecosystem interactions, conservation challenges, and the impacts of climate change on both marine and terrestrial habitats.
