Course Overview

Learn about marine mammals (including whales, dolphins, and porpoises) and seabirds while building hands-on skills in observing and collecting field data. This 1-credit, introductory weekend course at Hatfield Marine Science Center takes advantage of local marine life while introducing students to related courses, research, and other experiential learning opportunities at Hatfield. Open to all majors and minors, it’s a great option for students curious about marine mammals, interested in trying something new, or exploring what Hatfield has to offer.

Course Fees: FWFT - $101.00 Flat Fee.

Prerequisites: High school biology and chemistry

Course Schedule

  • Hybrid format, with a required in-person OR online pre-trip meeting and weekend trip to Hatfield Marine Science Center.

  • Weekend Trip to Hatfield (Newport, OR): 
    • Section 1 (CRN 61388) - May 2 - May 3, 2026
    • Includes transportation from the Corvallis campuslodging in Hatfield field housing, and meals provided in Newport.
