Course Overview

Effective communication is essential for a successful career in science, whether it’s in research, education and interpretation, or administration. This new field-based version of FW 289 helps students develop communication and interpersonal skills that will set them apart professionally and strengthen their connections within the scientific community.

Students will develop the critical skill of communicating complex ideas to a variety of audiences. They will also explore theories and practices for public speaking, meeting facilitation, and decision-making that emphasize diversity, ethics, and professionalism.

Held at the Hatfield Marine Science Center, the course includes hands-on field excursions and opportunities to engage with fisheries and wildlife professionals along the Oregon Coast. These experiences allow students to learn and practice in real-world settings, expand their professional network, and better understand the impact of effective science communication.
