Course Overview

This hybrid course offers an in-depth study of marine megafauna—mammals, birds, and turtles—focusing on the methods and analyses used to investigate their behavior and physiology, which are critical to conservation efforts. Through a combination of online learning and a required three-day field excursion based at Hatfield Marine Science Center, students will explore topics such as diving behavior, migration, thermoregulation, energy expenditure, and mating systems. This approach allows participants to gain hands-on experience with research techniques including tracking, remote biotelemetry, respirometry, genetics, and direct field observation, using the Oregon coast as a living laboratory. By integrating theoretical knowledge with practical skills and robust statistical analysis, this course prepares students with the essential competencies for careers in fisheries and wildlife sciences.
