HC 407 Seminar: To Stir Curiosity - Steinbeck and Rickett's Expedition To The Sea of Cortez
Course Overview
Students will explore how author John Steinbeck’s and marine biologist Ed Ricketts’ historic expedition to the Sea of Cortez forged their partnership and created big-picture connections between human nature and marine ecosystems. Steinbeck’s The Log from the Sea of Cortez will act as a guide in learning about a trip undertaken in the spirit of fun and adventure – a trip that stirs curiosity.

Interdisciplinary by Design: Students from the natural sciences, arts, and humanities are strongly encouraged to enroll.

Hatfield Overnight + Western Flyer Visit: Spend one night at Hatfield Marine Science Center and have the opportunity to board the fully restored Western Flyer, the actual vessel used by Steinbeck and Ricketts during their 1940 expedition of the Sea of Cortez.
- Read and Discuss: The Log from the Sea of Cortez, examining a journey driven by fun and adventure, and the enduring curiosity it continues to inspire.
- Science & Story in Conversation: Examine marine science and marine literacy while comparing Ed Ricketts’ scientific perspective with John Steinbeck’s literary lens, considering how different ways of seeing marine ecosystems deepen understanding and shape shared values.

- Required Weekend Field trip:
- Date: Saturday May 16 - Sunday May 17, 2026
- Location: Hatfield Marine Science Center
- Backup Field trip Date: May 23 - May 24, 2026. The class will visit the Hatfield only one of these weekends, based on vessel availability and weather conditions.
