Course Overview

Get your feet wet exploring Oregon’s rocky intertidal zone while studying the biology and ecology of marine and estuarine invertebrates. In this immersive course, students will conduct a comparative survey of the eight major invertebrate phyla—along with several lesser-known groups—examining biodiversity, habitat, feeding strategies, behavior, and the adaptive anatomy of each taxonomic group.

As part of the course, student teams will design and execute independent research projects “battling” anemone to better understand how these organisms interact with their environment and with each other. These hands-on experiences help build valuable skills in field observation, experimental design, teamwork, and scientific communication—ideal preparation for students interested in marine biology, ecology, or research-focused careers.
