MACO Supported Summer Internships

Marine and Coastal Opportunities partners with organizations to offer paid summer internships for undergraduate students, focusing on interdisciplinary topics of the ocean and coasts.

About the 2026 MACO Summer Internships

The Marine and Coastal Opportunities office is pleased to support coastal-based internships that focus on interdisciplinary topics of the ocean and coasts. These are 10 weeks in length, starting June 15, 2026, and ending August 21, 2026.

We thank our organizational partners and generous donors, who help to make these positions possible for Oregon State students.

  • Location- Newport, Oregon. See position descriptions for location details.
  • Housing – Summer group housing is provided. This group field housing is at Hatfield Marine Science Center. 
  • Hours – Summer Internships are full-time commitments, typically 40-hours per week. Within or in addition to this commitment, interns are expected to participate in Hatfield summer internship program activities such as orientations, professional development workshops, and work to fulfill scholarly expectations such as project plan writing, poster creation, and presentation prep and delivery.
  • Compensation – Interns will receive compensation as an Oregon State University hourly student worker at ($15.05 per hour). For 10-weeks full-time, this total compensation is approximately $6,000 gross salary. In addition, interns will receive a $400 professional development stipend for participating in program activities designed to bolster professional skills and preparedness. Group housing is provided by the program in addition to the salary.

All interns are expected to write a project plan/proposal, create a poster, and present their project at both the Coastal internship symposium at the end of the summer. Interns are encouraged to also present at a public meeting or conference after the internship, under the guidance of a mentor. Interns will also be required to participate in group check-ins, seminars, professional development, and other group activities.

Some positions require driving a University, agency, or personal vehicle; thus, interns must possess and maintain a current valid driver’s license in their state of residence to be eligible for use of University vehicles. Additional requirements may apply, if the incumbent chooses to use a personal vehicle or a rented or leased vehicle.

MACO Summer 2026 Internship Offerings

Exhibition Evaluation Intern - MACO Internship

Location: Oregon Coast Aquarium; Newport, OR

Mentor Organization: Oregon Coast Aquarium

Internship Focus: Exhibition Evaluation & Guest Engagement

Description: Spend your summer helping shape how visitors connect with Oregon’s marine and coastal environments. As an intern with the Oregon Coast Aquarium’s Mission Engagement team, you’ll support ongoing evaluation of exhibits and develop a deeper understanding of how people engage with ocean-focused messaging. You’ll carry out guest interviews and observations, help test and refine interpretive content, and contribute to meaningful improvements in how the Aquarium communicates science and conservation. This role is ideal for students who enjoy talking with people, are curious about social science research in real-world settings, and want hands-on experience that strengthens both communication and analytical skills-focused messaging.

Public Engagement Intern - MACO Internship

Location: Hatfield Marine Science Center; Newport, OR

Mentor Organization: Coastal Monitoring Station

Description:  Spend your summer transforming real-time estuary data into an engaging public exhibit at the Hatfield Marine Science Visitor Center. As an intern with the Coastal Monitoring Station (CMS), you’ll help design and develop an interactive display that communicates water quality conditions in Yaquina Bay to a broad audience. You’ll work with long-term monitoring data—including tides, temperature, salinity, pH, oxygen, nutrients, turbidity, and phytoplankton—and translate complex environmental information into clear, accessible visuals and narratives. This role is ideal for students interested in computer science, engineering, web or graphic design, and who want hands-on experience at the intersection of data, technology, and public-facing science communication.

Friends of Otter Rock Tidepool Ambassador Program Coordinator - MACO Supported Program

Tidepool Ambassador Program Coordinator College Internship - a Friends of Otter Rock Internship

Location: Otter Rock Marine Gardens, OR

Mentor Organization: Friends of Otter Rock

Description: This paid, part-time internship is open to college students pursuing marine science or other ocean-related fields of study. This internship offers valuable resume-building experience in leadership, public engagement in the field, and expanded knowledge about intertidal habitat and ecosystems, and a deeper understanding of how ocean health connects to local communities.

With support from Oregon State University’s Marine and Coastal Opportunities hub (MACO), benefits include housing, professional networking, and career development opportunities.
