About Us

Marine and Coastal Opportunities (MACO) is an academic support program housed in the Office of Academic Affairs alongside other university experiential learning programs. MACO grew from the catalyst Marine Studies Initiative (MSI), which began at OSU in 2016 with a mission to create a healthy future for our ocean and the planet through transdisciplinary research and teaching that emphasizes collaboration, experiential learning, engagement with society and problem solving.

MACO supports faculty and students in a variety of ways, so they can teach, learn, and study at the coast. This includes activities such as:

  • working with departments and faculty who want to create and offer field courses, ranging from short-term intensives to term-long experiences

  • awards and scholarships to reduce financial barriers

  • facilitating coastal-based research internships

  • raising visibility of  courses and programs at the coast
